Port of Call: Genoa
2:11 PMGenoa is the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. There are plenty to explore in this city from its museums, palaces, and gardens.
Since we only had half a day to explore, we visited some major sights in one area that was easily accessible. Luckily, the cruise port is one of the stops of the city’s Hop On, Hop Off bus. The stop is just outside the port terminal and you can easily and quickly get around or tour the city.
We opted to get off at Piazza de Ferrari were there were major sights within a short walking distance.
The Piazza de Ferrari has an embellished fountain in the main piazza.
A few blocks from the piazza, you can find the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo. Dedicated to San Lorenzo Martire and holds the ashes of St. John the Baptist brought during the first crusades. Duomo di Genova is a cathedral has three arched portal, Romanesque pillars and the beautiful black and white marble Gothic facade.

Unfortunately, when we visited the doors of the cathedral was closed so we could only appreciate it from the outside.
The 12th century cloisters standing in a small garden is all that remains of the
birth place of Christopher Columbus in 1451 as Cristoforo Colombo
The Casa di Colombo is his childhood home.
