A day trip to Toulon & Seyne du Sur

Remember the opening scene in Les Miserables were Jean Valjean was doing hard labor building ships. During the French Revolution, convicts were sent to Toulon to do hard labor and where they boarded ships to the colonies.



 Located on the south of France, you can reach the town with a quick water shuttle (8 minutes)  from the cruise port. 


 


As you get off the water shuttle, you are welcomed by seaside bistros and shops. 





A good way to quickly explore the town is by taking the Le Petit Train - the tourist train that takes you to the main spots of town. An entire loop takes about 50 mins and begins and ends at the Toulon Port. One Loop 7 euro (adult) 4 Euro (3-11 years old). 



From the port it’s only a few blocks off the sea front blvd to The Cours Lafayette Provencal Market. Open every morning excepts Mondays. 








  This is a great place to sample and purchase  fresh local produce, products made with Provence lavender, and amazing food like fresh baked baguettes and croissants. 


  








On the right side from the market if facing the water. You can find the over 900 year old city cathedral. The Romanesque church Le Cathedrale Sainte-Marie de las Seds with Gothic and single vaults. 








Formerly known as the “city of fountains”, you can see a lot of fountains around the town. Among them is the “Fontaine de la Fédération” in Place de la Liberté































 

Card Game sculpture in Place Raimu Square


Pagnol's famous Card Game sculpture in Place Raimu Square is one of 3 monuments dedicated to the Jules Muraire dit "Raimu". You can sit on the free chairs opposite Cesar & Panisse to take a souvenir photo. The other two monuments are a bust on Place des Trois Dauphins square and a fresco & statue on Place du Theatre square. 


 There are many other sights to visit if you have more time like the beach, naval museums, etc.

HOURS OF OPERATION:


There is a small city, Seyne du Sur,  you can take a taxi from the cruise port. 


Dedicated to the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, the L’eglise Notre Dame de Bon Voyage was often a stop for departing and returning sailors. 









With a Neo Gothic Facade and tilted wooden statues of St. Peter & St. Paul. 

















We walked around town for awhile before stopping for some coffee before heading back to the ship.
