A pilgrimage to the town of Assisi

On my first trip to Italy, we were deciding on either Pisa or Assisi as a stop on the way to Florence from Rome. As a devotee of Santa Chiarra or St. Claire, the choice was easy.  




Assisi is a medieval city on a hill and is easier accessed by a car. It is the birthplace of the patron saint of Italy and the founder of the Franciscan order - St. Francis of Assisi. Also a UNESCO World Heritage site. 


Unfortunately, all three churches we visited doesn't allow photos to be taken from the inside. This however lets you be more present in the moment as you explore and take some quiet time for prayer inside. 


Before heading into the town itself, we stopped at the Basilica di St. Maria Degli Angeli. 








One of the most sacred places for Franciscans, you will find a small church or the chiesetta of Porziuncola. Given by Benedictine monks to St. Francis, the present church is built around this. There are only a few seats inside. 







We headed then on to the Basilica of St. Franics. The tomb of St. Francis is in the crypt. Basilica di San Francesco d’Assisi. Visiting the Basilica is free. They now have an app you can download or rent an audio guide. 






The Basilica of Saint Clare is dedicated to Saint Clare of Assisi. A follower of St. Francis, her remains are buried in the crypt under the high altar.
