Pisa
4:39 PMWhen you think of Pisa, the first thought would be its iconic Leaning Tower. On our port stop to Livorno, we had the option of visiting Florence or Pisa. We opted to go to Pisa as time was limited.
The Baptistry, the Duomo, and the Torre in the Campo dei Miracoli |
In the Campo dei Miracoli or the Square of Miracles, you can find the Duomo of Pisa, the Baptistry, the Camposanto, Museo Delle Sinopie, Museo dell’ Opera del Duomo (cathedral museum) and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
On our visit, we explored the grounds of the piazza and visited the Baptistry and the Duomo.
The Baptistry or Batisttero di San Giovanni

The Duomo of Pisa or officially Cattedrale Metropolitana Primaziale di Santa Maria Assunta is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
The Duomo is a Romanesque cathedral with Pisan style of alternating grey & white marble.

Remains of St. Rainerius, the patron saint of Pisa. |
Some of the original art and features of the cathedral are in the Museo dell’ Opera del Duomo. Copies are in its place inside the cathedral.
Visiting the cathedral is free with a fixed time and you’ll need to get a ticket at the ticket counter. You can skip the line by using a paid ticket should it be a busy day.
One of the 7 wonders of the world, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is a definite landmark. Built as a bell tower, the Torre is 58.36 meters tall and it took 177 years to build. Built on unstable foundation, it started leaning in 1173 and is currently inclined 5.5 degrees.
If you want to up the tower, you need to climb 296 steps.
You can visit all or just several of the sights by purchasing a ticket to 1,2, or 3 monuments. If you want to climb up the leaning tower, I would suggest purchasing tickets as soon as you can to be able to reserve a slot. There are limited slots as there is a limited capacity in the tower.
The Camposanto is an eloborate cemetery with a piazza.

ENTRANCE FEE: 1 monument : € 5 ; 2 monument: € 7 ; 3 monument : € 8 valid on the day of issue.
From the cruise terminal of the port of Livorno, the cruise line offered free bus shuttles to bring us to town where we could take the bus to Pisa. Once you arrive at the bus terminal at Pisa, you’ll need to walk a couple of blocks to reach the Campo dei Miracoli. If you want to maximize your time or get ahead of the crowds I would suggest taking a taxi.
The taxi may drop you off on one end where the Baptistry is near or near the tower. The ticket counter is closer to the tower and is beside the Camposanto.
If you took the bus tour from the town center, make sure to remember the bus plate no. and the location where it parked as there are plenty of buses and the parking lot is big. There is a rest stop with a convenience store and toilets in the middle.
