Piazza di Spagna & Piazza del Popolo

Another really popular spot in Rome is the Scalinata di Spagna or Spanish Steps. 

It was named after the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See in the 17th Century - The Palazzo di Spagna. 



The steps were built to connect the Piazza di Spagna to the Trinita dec Monti - the church on top of the Spanish Steps. 



The Fontana della Barcaccia was designed by Pietro Bernini. 


The Piaza di Spagna is one of the famous squares in the city.

People used to sit on the steps and enjoy the piazza. It is however no longer allowed. 


The nearest train station is the Piazza di Spagna station and you can also take an elevator to the Trinita dei Monti if you don’t want to climb the steps. 


The Trinita dei Monti is the 16th century French Church above the Spanish Steps. 










You can see a beautiful view of the city from the church.


 


The Piazza del Popolo is a short walk from the Piazza di Spagna. Along the way stop one or more of the churches or chapels along the way.

Near the Piazza is the Santa Maria dei Miracoli & Santa Maria in Montesanto.

Piazza del Popolo or The People’s Square. 



The Flaminio Obelisk is an Egyptian obelisk in the center of the square was brought from Heliopolis during the reign on Augustus.
