Port Stop: Gibraltar

Located in the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula is the British colony  of Gibraltar.  



The saying "Steady as a rock " refers to the  iconic landmark : Rock of Gibraltar. 


From the top of the rock you see can both the continents of Europe and Africa. You can see Spain and Morocco. You can also view the Atlantic Ocean meet the Mediterranean Sea. 




ST. MICHAEL’S CAVE


This 1400 ft high rock limestone formation has as many as 140 caves including St. Michael’s cave. St. Michael’s cave, a narwal grotto was prepared as Ann emergency hospital during WWII. Just a 900m (20min)  walk down from Top of the Rock cable station. A unique auditorium can be found inside the cave where concerts and other performances are held. One must be careful walking around the cave as the floor maybe wet.


     



  



If you'd like to explore more extensively the cave, there are tours that take you deeper. 


BARBARY MACAQUE








The Barbary Macaque are tail less monkeys and are the only wild apes in Europe. Do not feed, touch or tease them. 




There have been incidents of these monkeys biting tourists. Do not carry food or make sure it's hidden and secure. They are interested in plastic bags and might snatch it away. 


On our visit, we had my nephew's milk in a plastic bag in the back of the van. When we opened the door to get down from the car, a monkey swooped in. It went straight for it and made a quick get away.

On the top of the rock where a few of the monkeys stay, they also go on top of cars. Like in our case, we had no idea one was already on top of the vehicle. 



Barbary Apes can be found on the the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. There are also monkeys outside St. Michael’s Cave. The “the Ape’s Den” is 1.7 km from the top of the rock cable station (800 m  uphill to St. Michael’s Cave and 800 m downhill to the middle station of cable car. 



A unique souvenir is the 5 pence coin with the image of the Barbery Apes. 


The Casements Square is a hub of activities. There are many stores and restaurants. In the north of square is the former military barracks.







Cruise terminal is about 1.5 km (10 minute walk) to Casemates Square. i would suggest taking the shuttles available at the cruise terminal (usually 3 euros one way per person) . You’ll have a hard time getting a cab in between. cabs and shuttle will drop you off at the entrance of casemates square. You can also opt to take a taxi tour which will minimize  walking. A typical taxi tour will bring you to a view point then st. Michael’s Cave, then the top of the rock. the road is one way and if you take the cable car will need to walk from the station to the visit the sights of the Upper Rock Nature reserve. 



CABLE CAR


The Top of the Rock is a quick 6 minute cable car ride to reach the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. It ascends 1000 ft runs every 10-15 mins. To reach the different sights on the reserve you'll need to walk the rest of the way. The station is beside the Alameda Botanical Gardens on Main street. It is 1.6 km from Casemates Square.


There are also combination tickets available that includes entry to the Nature Reserve and the cable car.

Adult pounds : 12.50 one way 14.50 (roundtrip) Child 6.00 One way 6.00 return Reduced 13.00 

Cable Car & Nature reserve ticket includes the cable car, apes, viewpoint, multimedia & wifi, nature reserve sights, and shuttle. 

Adult £ 22.00 Child - up to 13 13.50 reduced (child 5-12 ; above 65) - 21. children below 4 free
