Day trip from Barcelona: Montserrat

A day trip from Barcelona, Montserrat is a major pilgrimage site. The Shrine and Monastery of Montserrat is located 60 km from Barcelona on the jagged mountains of Montserrat. 





The grounds of the sanctuary include a Monastery (Benedictine Monks), the Basilica, Museum, gift shop cafeteria, and the Sacred cave. The oldest publishing house is also located here. 






The ”La Mare de Deu de Montserrat” commonly known as “La Moreneta” is a 12th century Romanesque wood sculpture is believed by some to have been carved by St. Luke. This miraculous image of the Patron Saint of Catalonia was hidden in the caves to protect it from the muslim invasion and was later found in 890. The image was found after lights and singing was observed from the mountains. The Sacred Cave or Santa Cueva can be visited from the sanctuary by either walking 1.5 km or taking a funicular to it. 



The 3 feet image is now located in an alcove behind the main altar of Basilica. 



You can see it closer by visiting the“Cambril de la Mare de Deu” or Chapel of our Lardy or “Camarin de la Virgin” the Chamber of the Virgin. The line to this small room is located on the right side before the main door of the church.



 You will walk up the corridor and stairs to reach the room. As the image is enclosed in glass, you will not be able to touch it but you can see it close and pray before it. The image was blackened by candles that burned before it day and night. The visiting hours for the chapel is 7:00-10:30 AM; 12:00-6:15 PM; 7:30-8:00 PM. The chapel is closed when there is a mass on going. 

This miraculous image of the La Morenata was visited by numerous saints like St. Vincent Ferrer, St. Anthony Mary Claret, St. Joseph Calansanctius, St. Ignatius, and St. John Paul II. St. Ignatius  began his new life and founded the Jesuit order after spending a night in prayer to the virgin. He left his old life as a knight and retired to Manresa which is the pilgrim Shrine of the Society of Jesus.

On the left side of the Basilica is where you can light candles. There is a variety of candles you can purchase. 



The Funicular of Sant Joan brings you above the mountains above the monastery while the funicular Santa Cova bring you to the sacred cave the La Morenata was found. 


If you’re there at 1 pm after mass & 7 Pm after community prayers, listen to the Escolania. the one of oldest boys choir in europe of 50 boys between 10-14 years old sing the Salve Regina and Virolai.

HOW TO GET HERE: take train from Plaza Espanya towards Manresa get off at Aeri de Montserrat station (For the cable car) or get off at the  Monistrol station (for the Cremallera funicular).

You can get combined ticket of the train and cable car or funicular at the Plaza Espanya train station
Cable Car takes about 5 minutes per way but is standing room only. It has amazing views of the mountains and leaves every 15 minutes. (one way 7.00 € roundtrip 10.30 €: Adult; 3.30 €/5.50€ (children) senior 5.30€/ 8.30€ ) 




The Cremallera funicular has seats but takes 15 minutes to the Monastery. It leaves every 20 minutes and goes up 600 meters up the mountain. (Adult: 8.10€ one way 12.50 € roundtrip adult; 4.45 €/ 6.85 €children; Senior: 7.30€ 11.25€ ; They also have other packages with either the Sant Joan or Santa Cova Funicular. 

Train from Barcelona: (from Placa Espanya Station) 
One way: 11.65 €(adult) 
Roundtrip: 21.10€ (adult) 

Combi Ticket (Train from Barcelona + Cable Car or the funicular) can be purchased at the Placa Espanya train station.

Funicular Ride: to the top of the Montserrat (Sant Joan)

Funicular to Santa Cova
