You can also explore JR KYOTO Station, which is a nice architectural building and has a free observatory to see Kyoto from above. 

The Sky Garden & Happy Entrance is on the 8th floor.  (to get there, take elevator to 7th then take the stairs to the 8th). There is a museum of stones (marbles and granites) from 35 countries. 



In front of the JR Kyoto Station is the bus station from to get around Kyoto. From here you can take the bus to major tourist sites like the Kiyomizu Dera, Kinkakuji Temple, and Ginkakuji Temple. Also across the street of the station stands the Kyoto Tower.
