Kyoto: Nijo Castle

This UNESCO World Heritage Site Edo Period Castle was once the seat of government where Emperor Meiji abolished the shogunate. The Castle has ornate painted walls, gilded ceilings, “nightingale” floors (floors that creek to warn of intruders – sounds like bird squeeking) 


The garden is a strolling garden famous for its variety of rocks.


 The gate to Ninomaru palace is the Karamon Gate. 


Notice the Kano School of paintings throughout the palace depicting landscapes, animal and flower scenes. 








You’ll need to leave your shoes at the entrance of the palace. This is to preserve the wooden floors. You’ll start and end the tour of the palace here.

Nearest Train Station:  A short walk from City Bus Stop Nijo-jo-mae (from JR Kyoto Station/Hankyu Railway Karasuma Station), or Nijo-jo-mae Station on the Tozai Subway Line
Hours of Operation: Hours: 8:45AM-4:00PM closing at 5:00PM
