Releasing paper lanterns at Old Shifen

Releasing paper lanterns in the middle of a railroad track has been a favorite thing for tourists to do when visiting Taiwan. 

A short trip from the capital, you can visit Old Shifen Street by taking the train or a bus from Taipei. 


Along the railroad track, you can find the sides lined with stores selling lanterns and souvenirs. 





There is no shortage of lanterns to light. You can choose one color lanterns (TWD $150) specific to your wish or choose a combination of 4 (TWD $200) or a lantern with all 8 colors (TWD $350). There is a corresponding meaning per color: Red (health & peace), Yellow (money & wealth), Blue (career & promotion), Purple (studies & pass tests) white (good luck & bright future), Orange  (love & marriage), Green (vigour & success), Magenta ( attraction & popularity - those seeking mate), & Pink (Happiness).




You can then write your wishes on the lanterns with paint they provide. 




When you’re ready, head to the track and the staff will take your photos and light the lantern. Once it’s almost most ready, they’ll hand it to you so you can release it to the sky. 






The paper lanterns have soybean soaked papers that limit its flight distance. The locals are alert to lanterns that fall unexpectedly. There is also a program that incentives locals to pick up fallen lanterns. 






While here drop by the Jingan Suspension bridge that was used in mining operations in the area and the Shifen Waterfalls. 



There are plenty of food and souvenir stalls too to choose from. You can buy little lanterns that light up.






Watch the locals blow whistle to notify a passing train. And as fast as people get off the tracks, they return as soon as the train leaves.
