How to get around Barcelona

12:07 PM

One can easily navigate the city with its extensive metro system and most tourist sites are walkable from each other. The city’s Hop On and Hop Off buses also stop close to the sites and reaches the city’s outskirts making it an easy option for those who don’t want to walk.

METRO TRAIN:

One single ride on the train, bus or funicular costs 2.15€. A cheaper alternative if you plan on going around a lot but not able to maximize the unlimited daily ticket in zone 1 is to purchase the T10 ride card. Most tourist sites are in Zone 1. the 10 ride card costs only 9.95€ and you can use  the same card for multiple person on the same trip if you are part of a large group.  Since you insert the ticket only upon entry, you can use 1 card for several people on the same train ride. Just insert the card, get the card and let each person pass through the entry gate then repeat for the next person. If you’ll be traveling a lot on the train though on one day, it is more economical to purchase the day pass. the T-Dia metro bus pass is 8.40€ for unlimited journeys in zone 1. prices would vary depending on the zone.

Make sure to have coins and small notes as ticket vending machines are often unmanned. If the machine doesn’t have change it won’t accept larger bills. We had issues on our first day as the machine wouldn’t accept our bills and thought it may have been folded too much or crinkled too much for the machine to accept. We found out only the next day that if the machine doesn’t have enough for change it won’t accept large bills.

You can choose english as language when buying and you may purchase multiple tickets per transaction.

Hola BCN is an economical ticket for unlimited travel in the integrated central rail station (includes the tram, bus, metro line operated by (TMB) , FGC and the RNEDE Suburban trains. You can also use to travel to and from barcelona airport.   You can buy ticket vending machines at metro stations.

BARCELONA HOP ON HOP OFF

There are two companies operating Hop On Hop Off Buses - City Sightseeing (Bus Turistic) and Grayline (Barcelona City Tour). They both stop at the same bus stops at major tourist sites. The city Sightseeing bus has 3 routes (Red, Blue, and Green ). The green route is their seasonal route goes to the beaches.  The Gray line bus has 2 routes - orange and green. They both start their routes at Placa Catalunya. Barcelona Bus Turistic has an app you can download and is the official hop on hop off bus of Barcelona. One route entire usually takes about 2 hours so I would suggest plotting out the sights you want to visit and go down at the ones that are further from the city center and factoring the busy times of popular sights like the Sagrada Familia. I ran out of time to go down at MNAC and was unable to visit as it requires a bus ride from the train station.  The frequency of bus is about 20-30 minutes giving you ample time between buses if you prefer to just to take a quick peak at sights.

You can purchase tickets on the bus.

Prices as of May 2017
