Sapporo

1:24 AM

Popular for its snow festival in February, Sapporo is also good to visit with its summer festivals and the nearby towns Furano & Biei's flower fields in full bloom.

The city of Sapporo celebrates summer with a beer garden in Odori Park and in several places in the city. Getting around Sapporo is easy with its trains and street cars. You can also visit the beer factory & museum. On my visit, I visited the Shiroi Korbito Park, Odori Park, Sapporo TV Tower, Ramen Alley, & JR Tower.

Website:
How to get there: You can take a 1.5 hour flight from Tokyo's Haneda or Narita airport to Chitose Airport then take an airport bus or the airport express train to the city. You can also ride the new Hokkaido Shinkansen to Hakodate for 4 hours then transfer to the local or limited express train for another 4 hours. Note that in order to reach Sapporo by Shinkansen, the last bullet train to take from TOkyo Station leaves at 3:20PM. You can visit the JR Hokkaido Website for the other timetables.

SHIROI KORBITO PARK

If you love cookies like me, make sure to drop by Shiroi Korbito Park. It's a factory and park for the yummy cookies. The air smells like cookie goodness as you approach the chocolate factory. Notice the Aztec relief structures on the wall of the building. Once you enter the park gates, the ticket counter for the factory tour is on your right.

Entry to the park is free but if you'd like to enter the museum and see the factory there is a Y600 entrance. Inside you'll see chocolate related collections like chocolate teacups, demitasse, chocolate boxes and packaging.

There is also a diorama of the chocolate process from the roasting the beans to making them into chocolate. You'll see the production line of Shiroi Korbito. It's a lengua de chat cookie with a filling of white or milk chocolate. You can also personalize a cookie tin or your decorate your own cookie with a extra fee.

On the top floor of the Chocolate factory is the chocolate lounge where you can enjoy their popular parfait so or drink their signature chocolate milk (Y540) overlooking the park.

There is a gift shop as you exit where you can not only purchase the yummy cookies but also the other brand products like the Ishiya. Prices here are almost the same as those in the airport but they also sell exclusive park items.

The park has a small rose garden, train, and many small play houses. Enjoy a soft white chocolate or chocolate ice cream (Y300), chocolate milk float (Y410), iced coffee float (Y380).

Nearest Train Station: Miyanosawa Station
How to get here: 5-10 minute walk from Miyanosawa Station of the Tozai Subway Line. Follow the signs to SHiroi Korbito Park as you exit the station. Once out to the street, turn right walk to the next corner then right and walk a few blocks. You'll know your close when you can smell freshly baked cookies.
