Visiting the Daizafu Tenmangu Shrine

9:57 PM

One of the most important Tenmangu Shrines in Japan, the Dazaifu Tenmangū is popular among students.

Dedicated to the spirit of scholar, poet & calligrapher Sugawara Michizane. Also known by his divine name Tenjin -the Shinto deity of education. Students flock to the shrine to pray for their exams.

Within the grounds of the shrine, you may notice many ox statues with shiny heads. The statues are meant to represent the “goshingyu” or the sacred ox.

It is believed that by patting it’s head you can become smarter and expand your knowledge.

The version today was built in 1591 and is 400 years old. From a bird’s eye view the lake forms a shape of “shin” which is the Japanese character for heart.

Purify oneself by crossing the Taiko bridge at the Daizafu Tenmangu Temple. The first arched represents the past, the flat section the present and the 2nd arch the future (closest to the Honden or main hall). A typical Buddhist architectural concept that one thought only should be helped at a time.

The Honden was first constructed in 919 but the one that currently stands was rebuilt in 1591 and is about 400 years old.

As you exit the Dazaifu Station, turn left on the road and walk about 2-3 blocks to the Daizafu Tenmangu Shrine. The street will be lined with stores and restaurants.

On the way, you’ll see one a the Daizafu Starbucks store on the left side of the road.
