Throwing a coin at the Fontana di Trevi
10:55 PMFontana di Trevi is one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks.
The central figure of Nocola Salvi’s design is Neptune beside two tritons. These two allegorical figures supposedly represent fertility and good health. They also symbolize the contrasting moods of the sea. One triton is trying to master an unruly sea horse while the other leading a quiet beast.
There is a tradition of throwing coins while your back is turned to the fountain. Legend has it if you throw a coin into the fountain you will return to the Eternal City of Rome. If you throw two coins, you’ll return and fall in love but if you throw 3 coins you’ll also marry. The coins collected at the fountain go to a good cause of helping the poor and homeless of the city.
I did throw a coin on my first visit to Rome a couple years back though the fountain was going through restoration. I did return to Rome a few years later.
As the fountain is really popular expect crowds. If you want to see it or take photos with a few people, visit really early in the morning. I woke up early on our last day and explored the city before the crowds.
